LNG trucks in India: Pvt sector entry sparks change, but challenges remain
As India presents its credentials at the 29th edition of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan, this week, its heavy-duty transport sector, the biggest source of emissions in transportation, will be top of the mind for many who are looking for a shift from diesel to liquefied natural gas, or LNG, fuelling the country’s march towards Net Zero by 2070.The idea is not new. State-run Petronet LNG, India’s biggest LNG importer, has harboured plans of using the fuel in the transport sector for the past six years. But lack of government incentives and resistance from small transporters meant that though Petronet had planned 1,000 LNG retail outlets in three years, it ended up establishing only a couple. What has changed now is the entry of the private sector and an acceptance among India’s large corporations that their emissions need to be in order before government regulations come calling. The result is that from Gautam Adani to Prashant Ruia, and from heads of India’s top state-run oil and gas companies to top city gas utilities, everyone is betting on turning India’s goods transport by road green. Not by electrifying the trucks but by replacing diesel with the cleaner […]

‘Financing Still Slow’: Logistics Specialist Anand Mimani On Running Energy-Efficient Trucks
Anand Mimani, chief executive officer of logistics company GreenLine, explains the business of alternate fuel-driven trucking services. As the focus of the world is moving increasingly towards cleaner forms of energy, industries are realigning their way of doing business with sustainability goals. A key factor in being sustainable is minimising pollution that is created primarily because of logistics. Liquefied natural gas (LNG)-driven trucking services are trying to efficiently transport goods while also minimising carbon emissions. “LNG helps reduce about 30% of the carbon dioxide and other gaseous materials like SoX (sulphur oxides) down to about 100%, NOx (nitrogen oxide) down to about 59%, and particular material down to about 91%,” Anand Mimani, chief executive officer of logistics company GreenLine, told The Core. Transporting heavy goods over long distances, the environmental impact tends to be substantial. This begs the question of tackling logistics in an energy-efficient way. While the policy focus is increasingly on migrating to cleaner forms of energy, when it comes to alternate fuels, access to financing cleaner vehicles becomes difficult. “The truck financing on account of alternate fuel is a little slow by the institutions. We are requesting all the necessary offices to look into it and help and […]

Decarbonisation A Key Imperative For Sustainability
The Government is increasingly recognising the importance of fostering a sustainable transition and offering initiatives such as emission standards, tax breaks, and grants to encourage the adoption of green technologies The green fuel already promises to revolutionise long-haul transport with its ability to cover 1000–1400 km on a single fill. A worldwide push for cleaner and greener fuels is underway as firm and measurable action against climate change becomes more crucial than ever. The entire ecosystem is buzzing as corporations, financial institutions, policy think tanks, and governments make a concerted effort to cut down on harmful emissions. As per a Deloitte report, the road freight industry, vital to the world economy, is responsible for about 9 percent of CO2 emissions worldwide. Road freight decarbonisation is becoming a global necessity and a top concern for businesses, governments, and society. In less than 30 years, this sector must cut its emission intensity by more than 80 percent to meet the targets outlined in the Paris Agreement. Given its geographical size and population, India is a crucial cog in the global energy transition. Considering the challenge’s enormity, India has initiated a series of steps in the last few years to build a gas- […]

LNG emerges as game-changer for cutting scope 3 emissions in India’s road transport sector
India can set a global example for sustainable transportation through the implementation of LNG. India is currently pursuing what would appear to be two competing ambitions. On the one hand, it is powering up its economy to transform itself from an emerging market into a fully developed superpower. On the other hand, with its pledge to hit the net-zero mark by 2070, it has made a bold commitment to sustainability. On the face of it, these two, it would seem, stand at odds against each other. But they don’t have to be. The road transport sector holds the key to pursuing both simultaneously. The sector accounts for a staggering 90 per cent of the overall emissions in the transportation industry. A significant contributor to these emissions is the extensive diesel-powered truck fleet traversing the vast subcontinent. Yes, these trucks, in many ways, form the backbone of our economic growth. But they contribute as much as 12 per cent to India’s total greenhouse gas emissions, not the transport sector alone. Switching them over to cleaner alternative fuels is, therefore, absolutely imperative. In this way, they can continue to, quite literally, drive our economy. At the same time, they can play a […]

Importance of decarbonising Indian road logistics by Anand Mimani
India, as the fastest growing major economy, faces the challenge of decarbonising its road transport sector, which accounts for a significant portion of energy demand and associated emissions. For India to achieve its net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target by 2070, substantial efforts will have to be taken to decarbonise the transport sector. Road transportation accounts for less than one fifth of India’s final energy use, but is responsible for nearly 12% of the country’s energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Given the rapid growth of the Indian economy, this sector, and its emissions, are growing at a faster rate compared to other sectors. Hence, the urgent need to address the environmental impact of diesel-powered transportation and explore viable low emission alternatives, especially for long haul road movement. Electric vehicles (EVs) have started making inroads into the last mile logistics, but widespread adoption of EVs for long-haul heavy-duty transport will take much longer as significant advancements in battery and charging technology, as well as charging infrastructure, are required for long haul applications. In fact, we believe EVs will be a good solution for short haul heavy duty freight transportation, reducing CO2 & other toxic emissions significantly. Similarly, zero emission fuel options like […]

The LNG Path to zero emissions
India will have to act now if it wants to drastically slash emissions from its road transport sector. The nation has set itself the target of reducing planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2070. While that may seem like a long way off, India needs to embark on its march towards net zero right away and the road transport sector will have to be a key area of its focus. Road transport accounts for roughly 90 percent of the overall transport sector’s emissions. A major share of these polluting greenhouse gases is emitted by the diesel- powered fleet of trucks ceaselessly crisscrossing the vast length and breadth of the subcontinent. In fact, long-haul road logistics contribute as much as 12 percent to the overall greenhouse gas emissions of India as a whole. However, since the sector forms the backbone of India’s intricate logistics network, there is no alternative but to keep the trucks running. Switch to cleaner fuelsIndia is pushing ahead with electrification of its roads.Sales of electric vehicles (EVs) in the two-wheeler, three-wheeler, passenger car and light commercial vehicle spaceare gaining momentum. But despite their rapid evolution, EVs are still more ofa short-range, intra-city mobility solution. EV technologythat can […]
